About you

What travellers ask us most

Is this the tour voted Tripadvisor's #1 experience in the world?

Yes. Our free walking tour of Porto's historic centre was twice voted Tripadvisor's #1 experience in the world.

Is the Porto Free Tour really free? How much should I tip?

Yes. Booking is free and there is no ticket. At the end you pay what you think the tour was worth. That is how our guides make their living, and why they put their heart into every walk. As a reference, not a rule, travellers often tip €15–€25 per adult. Tips are in cash only, in euros.

What time does the tour start?

Every day, with several departures. Start times change through the year with the sunset, so please check the booking calendar on this page for today's times. Arrive 10 minutes early for check-in.

Where does the tour start and end?

It starts on Avenida dos Aliados, in front of City Hall, and ends at Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto). Look for our guide with the blue umbrella.

How long is it, and is it a hard walk?

About 2h30 on foot, with stops. Porto has steep hills and cobbled streets. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

What will I see?

Avenida dos Aliados and City Hall, Livraria Lello, the Carmo and Carmelitas churches, Clérigos Tower, one of the city's best viewpoints, São Bento Station and Porto Cathedral. Stops can vary with the guide, the weather and local events.

Do we go inside Livraria Lello?

No. We stop outside Livraria Lello, often said to have inspired parts of the Harry Potter universe, but we don't go in. If you want more Harry Potter stories, we also run a Harry Potter Free Tour in Spanish.

Do I need to book?

It is not mandatory, but we highly recommend it to guarantee your spot. Booking is free and helps us keep groups at a comfortable size. Groups of 7 or more pay a reservation fee of €13.50 per adult and €7 per child aged 7 to 15.

What language is the tour in?

This tour is in English. We also run it in Spanish, Italian and French.

Does the tour run in the rain?

Yes, rain or shine. In bad weather we adapt the route. We only cancel in extreme conditions, and we let you know by email or WhatsApp.

Can children or wheelchair users join?

Children are welcome, and under-18s must come with an adult. For strollers or very young children, a private tour lets us set the pace. Porto has steep hills, cobblestones and stairs, so we cannot guarantee the whole route is suitable for wheelchairs.

Can I do another tour on the same day?

Yes, if the times don't overlap. Many guests pair this tour with our Ribeira Free Tour, which explores the riverside.
