Porto Street Art Free Tour
The Porto off the beaten path

If you want to see the Porto off the beaten path, our Alternative Free Tour is the tour you’re looking for. This free tour is a great introduction to the Alternative Porto and you’ll get to see many projects of street art in Porto in a captivating tour. But this Take Porto free walking tour is much more than street art, tags and graffiti. Want to know more about Porto’s nightlife? What about Porto’s architecture? This free tour will present another side of Porto, a less conventional side and being the Alternative Porto Free Tour even the ending will be unconventional. The Alternative Porto Free Tour begins at Praça Carlos Alberto, a less touristic plaza. Of medieval origin, this small plaza is a celebration of the city with its museums, traditional restaurants and esplanades. You even have a flea market every Saturday called the Porto Belo market. Also worth mentioning is the geometrical pattern of the Portuguese Calçada that leads to the statue. Praça Carlos Alberto is the perfect setting to begin our tour.  Next to this wonderful plaza we can spot the first ever legal graffiti in the city of Porto, inaugurated in April 2014, the mural of D. Quixote by Mesk, Fedor & Mots. This mural is right at the beginning of Rua Miguel Bombarda probably the most alternative street in Porto. Once a forgotten road, Rua Miguel Bombarda was reborn with Porto Art District and today is overflowing with art galleries, bars and concept stores. As we venture into Porto’s main commercial artery, Santa Catarina, we will be able to appreciate the contrasts between some of the city’s most conventional streets and urban art projects, namely the façade at the Via Catarina Shopping, The Less Traveled Path by sculptor and designer Paulo Ramunni. The street of Santa Catarina is an explosion of color and life and some of the best street artists in the city perform daily on its sidewalks. In contrast with one of the most touristic areas of the city is Rua da Madeira where we can find the surprising mural Quem és Porto? by artist Miguel Januário. Three thousand tiles, the largest community panel in the city, tries to answer the question and convey the identity of the city to us. Next to the panel is one of Europe’s best alternative clubs, Gare Porto, where you get to experience Porto’s underground scene. Heading towards the Douro River, there’s plenty of street art to see but nothing compares to crossing the Dom Luís Bridge to the other side and embrace the urban art projects in Gaia. Unlike Alice in Wonderland our tour will not begin with a rabbit but end with one. Arguably one of the most astonishing works in Porto, the Half Rabbit by Bordalo II is a remarkable project with a beautiful message to end our journey.  This is undoubtedly the city’s most eclectic walking tour and as you can see we go by many of the alternative places to visit in Porto. You will also be rewarded by our guide’s top alternative things to do in the city. Take our Alternative Porto Free Tour so you may take the other side of Porto back home.
