A couple of Portugal’s seven wonders are right here, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém.  The Jerónimos Monastery’s construction was ordered by King Manuel I in 1502 to celebrate Vasco da Gama's discovery of the maritime path to India. It was built on the site of a small chapel founded by his uncle, Henry the Navigator and it is where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. Inside the Jerónimos Monastery you will be able to explore the two-story cloister and appreciate the highly ornate architecture. But the fort was also a last familiar sight for the Portuguese navigators upon their departure. Just before lunch we will take a short tram or train ride to our destination Time Out Market. We will start the afternoon at the center of Chiado, Lisbon’s cultural center and enter the quincentennial Bairro Alto where our guide will share with you the history of this very charismatic district. Exiting Bairro Alto, we will enjoy the magnificent view of Lisbon at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, from the top of the hill all the way to the Tagus River. This ample, landscaped garden offers what is arguably one of the best views of Lisbon. We will then continue to the Carmo Convent and Church to talk about revolutions before climbing to the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa to admire a 360º degree view of the city. Downtown Lisbon will be our next stop and the central theme here will be the great earthquake of 1755 and the Marquis of Pombal’s innovative reconstruction plan. Crossing Downtown Lisbon we will start to climb towards Lisbon Cathedral and then one of Lisbon’s most sought after viewpoint, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia.
